Wayward Souls by Susan J. Morris

Witches, mystery, and Gothic intrigue—an enchanting adventure with unmistakable Sherlock Holmes vibes…

Wayward Souls was so much fun and an absolute treat for witchy readers who also have a soft spot for Sherlock Holmes. Susan J. Morris delivers exactly the gothic, magical atmosphere the premise promises, creating a story that is equal parts mystery, fantasy, and adventure.

Set against the backdrop of a beautifully realized Gothic Ireland, the world feels rich with lore and history. Morris's writing is immersive without becoming overwhelming, making it easy to lose yourself in the story and its supernatural elements. The characters are equally compelling, each bringing their own strengths and personality to the page.

One of the highlights of the novel is the dynamic between Helena and Samantha. Their chemistry is undeniable, and every interaction crackles with tension. Their banter is witty, engaging, and effortlessly pulls you into their relationship, making them a joy to follow from beginning to end.

Although Wayward Souls is the second book in the series, I hadn't read the first installment before picking it up. Thankfully, Morris writes in such an inviting and accessible way that I never felt lost. She provides just enough context to keep new readers grounded without slowing the story down, making it surprisingly easy to jump into the series here.

After finishing this one, I'm definitely going back to read book one. If you're looking for a gothic fantasy with witches, mystery, memorable characters, and just the right amount of Sherlock Holmes-inspired vibes, Wayward Souls is well worth picking up.
