Shallow Waters

12/21/2017

Her breath fogged the air in front of her; it hung just above her eyes. It should have faded quickly – but the staleness she felt inside her had manifested itself into this world. How? Even the Gods she pretended to pray to, could not fathom an answer to that question.
She walked along the ridges of the lake; the rocks on the edges sharp to the touch. They might have hurt her feet, she did not know – because she could not feel. She had not had sensation of years, so many years that the trees around the lake could not withhold them. An ancient so long within this world, within her.
As her feet touched the water; it was an uncomfortable warmth that greeted her. She walked towards the center of the lake, the water only rising just above her ankles. Where is the rest of the lake? Her voice, then began booming. Where is the lake? This was all there was, and she grew angry.
Calling upon the creatures in her self-proclaimed kingdom; she ordered them to dig. This lake would have a depth the world had never seen. She ordered them to dig – and her anger, it became more unbearable as she noticed their efforts were futile. With time, the creatures realized, that their love – their want to help her was fruitless but none the less, the continued to dig. They continued to dig, some passed, and the rest eventually faded into the forest, unbeknownst to the angered woman.
Soon, she found herself all alone. For in all her years, she never understood that depth comes from within and will never be created by others.
