The Charmed Library by Jennifer Moorman

Checked out too soon — and not in the magical way…

I went into The Charmed Library with high hopes. From the description, it sounded like Night at the Museum but set in a library — and honestly, who wouldn’t want that? Unfortunately, the execution fell flat almost immediately.

The biggest issue? The writing feels like it was penned by a teenager pretending to be an adult. The main character, Stella, is supposed to be thirty, yet she speaks and behaves like a sixteen-year-old. The constant, heavy-handed Disney references don’t help either — they come off as cloying rather than charming.

There’s even a line where someone tells Stella, “You’re not a child,” and I found myself thinking, Are we sure about that? Because the narrative certainly doesn’t treat her like an adult. Her decisions often make little sense and seem designed only to push the plot forward — a hallmark of lazy storytelling.

If Stella had actually been written as a teenager, some of this might have worked better (though we’d thankfully have less of the awkward romance with Wade). As it stands, the story feels uneven and immature, as if it can’t quite decide what it wants to be.

In short: promising premise, poor execution. I don’t recommend it.
